Auki Labs has launched McKenna, a new augmented reality Web3 app that helps you decorate mixed reality environments.

Hong Kong-based Auki Labs is the creator of posemesh, a decentralized spatial computing protocol for AR, the metaverse, and smart cities. It created McKenna as a tool for decorating physical spaces digitally through shared augmented reality with non-fungible tokens (NFTs), photos, videos, and notes.

The app is designed to integrate with users’ wallets and allows them to display and view digital art in their own spaces, from living rooms and lounges to offices and museums. It has a game called Floorcraft Blasters where you use your phones to compete with each other in a multiplayer mixed reality game.

Unlike other apps that enable users to briefly display NFTs in augmented reality, McKenna is powered by Auki Labs’ posemesh, a decentralized, precise positioning system that allows for persistent and social experiences. This posemesh integration makes McKenna the first app of its kind to enable social viewing of digital art in persistent augmented reality in indoor spaces.

“Digital things feel a lot more real when you can see them together. McKenna’s ability to display digital art socially in augmented reality is really a new kind of experience,” said Nils Pihl, CEO of Auki Labs, in a statement. “McKenna makes it possible to create immersive and social AR experiences that transform how people feel about both the art and the space that it’s presented in. It goes from being on your phone screen to being in your space. Seeing together is believing.”

Displaying art with McKenna takes only minutes and is available on iPhone and Android devices. Users first establish their own posemesh domain using Auki Labs’ Domain Management Tool (DMT) and QR codes. These “portal” placements serve as discovery points and calibration references in a unique and persistent coordinate system.

After creating a domain in DMT, McKenna users simply place their favorite images, videos and memories in the coordinate system. Visiting devices can then enter this digital layer with an external sense of space and view experiences together in their precise placements.

Auki Labs is mixing augmented reality and the real world.

“Shared augmented reality is a radically different AR paradigm, dramatically accelerating the promise of a collaborative metaverse,” said Jamie Burke of Outlier Ventures, who invested in the project in 2021, in a statement. “The posemesh’s decentralized machine perception network is a foundational protocol for the spatial internet; based on principles of data sovereignty and privacy.”

Through a partnership with Joy Studios, McKenna users will soon be able to display unique in-game collectibles in their physical surroundings, earned through participation in their upcoming title Kingdom of Dice.

Since 2019, Auki Labs and the posemesh has raised a total of $19 million in seed funding, including support from industry giants like Animoca Brands, Outlier Ventures and Shima Capital.

After the launch of the posemesh’s underlying utility token $AUKI later this year, early McKenna users, domain owners, and decentralized domain server operators will be able to earn token rewards for creating experiences and attracting visitors.
